Order of Events

Good Afternoon!

Today we celebrated Alida's birthday!!!  Happy 6th Birthday!

We re-read our story for the week and worked together to put the order of events from the story into order.  We also discussed stories where the order of events is important and some stories where the order of events could be changed without changing the whole story.

During SMART time we worked on some new skills, such as rhyming on the trampoline:

Reading CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) words while walking across the balance beam and sliding the word cards into a mailbox!

We also practiced counting by 5's while doing a V-sit.

For our fine motor skills we transferred water between two cups using a dropper.

We put cheerios onto spaghetti noodles to make a tower.

We used eraser toppers to stack dice.

During math we talked about the addition symbol how we use the addition symbol when putting groups of things together.  We also did a logic problem on our Promethean Board.

This afternoon we worked in our journals and had fun with friends at choice time.

Another great day!

Mrs. Huettl

Lots-o-Movement!

Good Afternoon!

This morning we had our literacy centers based around our story, A Bed for the Winter.  We continued our work on our individualized learning paths on abcmouse.com.

We read, traced and wrote sight words and identified beginning sounds.

We colored pictures to show what happened to the dormouse in the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

We matched animals and their habitats and made a lift the flap book!

We had a special treat and had movement with Mr. Tinjum today!  We had a lot of time to move with movement, recess, and gym today!!!

Mrs. Huettl's friend Miss Jessi visited our classroom today.  Miss Jessi is studying to be a teacher at St. Norbert's outside of Green Bay, WI.  She is home for her winter break and decided to come hang out in kindergarten for the day.

Thank you to those of you who have sent in 8 packs of crayons :)  We hope to start the second half of the school year with fresh, new crayons in our crayon cups!

See you tomorrow!

Love,
Mrs. Huettl

Yes We Can!

Today Mr. Tinjum came in to talk with our class for our weekly kindness lesson.  The lesson was about not saying, "I can't" and giving up.  Even though we may be the youngest students in the school, we can do amazing things.  If we are having trouble with something, instead of saying, "I can't" we can ask for help! Not giving up is a great lesson to learn!

This morning we worked hard on our reading and word work!  We will start assessing soon for the end of second quarter and I can't wait to see all the growth that has taken place in the past nine weeks!

During math today we explored a new math tool: the pattern block template.  We traced shapes and made our own creative designs!

This afternoon we worked hard in our journals.  Here are a couple examples of friends that are getting the hang of writing two sentences!  Way to go!

See everyone tomorrow for another great day!

Love,
Mrs. Huettl

MIA and Exploring Wood

Good Afternoon!

On Friday we had a pretty unusual day.  We met with our buddies to go over our groups for afternoon field trip and the expectations for the art institute.

We also made a snow globe art project.  They turned out so great, we are using them for the school's front bulletin board!

In the afternoon we hopped on the bus and went to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts with our 2nd grade buddies.  We saw many different pieces of art all themed around America.  It was a great experience being in a museum and seeing the real peices of art work!

Today we started working on reading words with the medial i sound (such as pig, sit, Tim, etc.)

We also read our new story for the week, A Bed for the Winter.  This story follows around a dormouse who is looking for the right bed for his winter slumber.  The book addresses several animals that hibernate during the winer months, and the shelters that they utilize.

During math today we played the game, Top-It (which you may remember as War).  Have your child teach you how to play this game with a deck of cards at home.

This afternoon, during science, we explored wood and water.  Last week, one of our friends said, "if you get wood wet, it will break!"  So, instead of explaining, we let all our friends see for themselves what happens when wood gets wet.

We also checked to see if would wood sink or float!

Lena won the AR test drawing today!  Congratulations Lena!!!

We had a great day in kindergarten!  See you all tomorrow!

Mrs. Huettl

Still Photoless

We are still without photos over here in K.  This time, I left the camera at home!  Yikes!

This morning we reviewed our jobs during our reading choice time: read to self, listen to reading, or word work.  We also read two different stories about bears and determined which story was realistic and which one was fantasy.

In math we learned about number lines and how to hop between numbers.

In journals, we worked again at writing two sentences!

Tomorrow we will take a field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art-should be a fun day!

Mrs. Huettl

First Day Back!

A great first day back!  It was like we never left-we all got right back into the swing of things :)  (Except I forgot to take pictures...oops!)

We had four great centers this morning:
1) We continued on our individualized learning paths on abcmouse.com
2)We created a hibernating bear scene (which are hanging in our hallway)
3) We practiced our nuber writing, and writing tallies to represent numbers
4) We practiced rhyming words by working on some rhyming puzzles.

We had SMART time today and continued to work on the skills we began prior to our winter break.

In math we talked about ten frames and Mrs. Huettl flashed us some dot cards and we had to visualize the number of dots we saw-there was not time to count them all one by one!

This afternoon we took on the challenge to write two sentences in our journals!  I was so impressed!  Hopefully I'll have some examples to share with you tomorrow!

See you in the morning!

Love,
Mrs. Huettl

Pajama Party!

Our last day of school before winter break was so much fun!

We started the day by meeting with our 2nd grade buddies.  We colored snowflakes and took group pictures.

Then started our holiday stations!  We had six fun stations that we rotated through.

We made Santa graham crackers:

We made mice with candy cane tails:

We mixed up some reindeer food and read and colored a reindeer book:

We made our own jingle bell bracelets:

We made paper wreaths and picked out some coloring sheets:

We graphed holiday shaped fruit snacks:

We had a great time and made lots of goodies!

In the afternoon, we had popcorn, juice, and watched Olive, the Other Reindeer!

I hope everyone had a wonderful break!  Can't wait to see you all in the morning!

Love,
Mrs. Huettl
